An Audio Transcription
Increases The Program Value
It's always worth getting a transcription of your recording as this will enhance the value of your product and also provide the basis for future products such as PDF ebooks and workbooks.
Transcription is simply when someone listens to your recording and types it up into print format.
To do that successfully, you need someone who is a very good typist and who is used to transcribing audio. They will probably use specialist equipment such as foot pedals to pause, rewind and fast forward the audio – keeping the hands free for typing.
Having Your Recording Transcribed
An expert will also know what to do if parts are difficult to hear and may well edit a little as they go through by cutting out umms and ahhs.
There are four ways of finding a good service:
Personal recommendation: As with most things, by far the best way to find a good service is through recommendation. The problem is that really good transcriptionists are like gold dust and often people won't share their details with anyone! Still you should ask around first.
Google search: Key in transcription services into your favorite search engine and see what comes up.
Online services: There are some companies that specialize in providing transcription services online. You upload a recording and they supply the transcript. Some examples are:
Online freelance workers: Post details of your project on online sites like www.elance.com or www.guru.com
The price you pay will normally depend on how quickly you want the script returned. You should normally allow a few days or expect to pay a premium for faster service.
Normally you'll pay for the work after it has been completed. You should expect the document returned in Microsoft Word format. You may have to do a bit of editing work on the transcript when it is returned to you.
That's why it's not always a good idea to choose the lowest price.
Some transcriptionists may just type it as they hear it, others will edit a bit as they go along – and remember it's not always possible to hear audio recordings clearly so what they type may not be what was said! So make sure it is clear at the start what type of service you expect and are paying for.
Abbey's Advice Always get your audio transcribed. It increases the value of the recording significantly.
