Collecting payments

Unless your business is already quite large, you probably don't want to go through the costs and hassles initially of setting up a merchant account to process credit cards yourself. There are many companies that offer services giving you the ability to collect payments quite easily.

Each of the providers have different strengths and weaknesses depending on your needs and fees therefore vary. Here are some of the top providers:

PayPal:
www.PayPal.com This has become a widely-used and convenient method of payment which is easy to set up.

Google Checkout:
www.GoogleCheckout.com Google's competitor to PayPal

Clickbank:
www.clickbank.com Clickbank is a combination payment processor and affiliate program manager. Using them, you can collect payment from your customers, send the customer to the download page so they get their product, and pay affiliates automatically. Currently they only allow the sale of digital products.

PayDotCom:
www.PayDotCom.com Works very much like Clickbank, but with your PayPal account. That has a lot of benefits, not least of which are getting your money earlier, setting higher prices more easily, and being able to sell both digital and physical products.

2Checkout:
www.2checkout.com Payment processor with lower fees but lacks the advantage of being a ready-made affiliate program. They also allow for the sale of both digital and physical products.

Shipping

If you are not delivering the product immediately as an online download, you will need to make arrangements for shipping the physical product. The payment processors will normally allow you to collect full address details from your purchasers and you can then decide whether to arrange the delivery yourself or outsource it to someone else.

Bear in mind that if you have more than just a single audio CD, you'll need someone to assemble the whole package. If you decide to make all the arrangements yourself, you will need to use the postal service or set up a courier account with someone like FedEx or UPS.

You need to be able to guarantee delivery and make sure it happens quickly - otherwise you will have very unhappy customers. If you choose to outsource this part of the work to a specialist, they may be able to take on the shipping and delivery for you.

The quality of presentation and delivery will make a big difference to how your product is perceived so it's important not to cut corners with this.
